Trainer Appraisals

Trainer Reappointment

The School of Primary Care has a statutory duty to notify the GMC of your appointment and reappointment which normally happens every 5 years (2 years for new trainers first appointment).

Details of the reappointment process and requirements are available here:

Types of Appraisals

Appraisal

  • Trainers require an annual appraisal. The new template to be used can be found on our website.

Types of appraisals:

  • TPD appraisal:
    • For new trainers, a TPD appraisal is required once within the first 2-year appointment.
    • For established trainers, a TPD appraisal is required once within each 5-year appointment cycle.
  • Peer appraisals – these are to be arranged by the Trainer and can be carried out within the same practice. The programme must be sent a copy of the completed form to store in the Trainers file and to log completion. For trainers at North Cumbria, there will be an opportunity to complete a peer appraisal during the annual trainer conference.
  • Cross border conversations - there will be an opportunity to complete the appraisal at the annual GP Educators Conference during the session titled ‘cross border conversations’

Feedback on observed teaching

This is no longer a requirement. The new appraisal template mentioned above covers reflection on trainer feedback.

Appraisal Process

In each year of your 5-year reappointment cycle you must complete a trainer appraisal. It is acceptable to do a Peer Appraisal 4 out of 5 of the years, but in the final year of your reappointment cycle there will be an appraisal with a TPD to help prepare you for reappointment.

For all new trainers the requirement is slightly different, in that you are required to have a trainer appraisal with a TPD within the first two years of appointment.

Appraisal Documentation

After each peer appraisal you are required to submit your completed Peer Appraisal form to the training programme via email Emma.Clarke86@nhs.net

It is each trainers professional duty to the GMC to have an appraisal in each role. As a trainer you should submit the outcome of your peer appraisal to the training programme, failure to do so may adversely affect your trainer reappointment.
