Trainer Appraisals
Trainer Reappointment
The School of Primary Care has a statutory duty to notify the GMC of your appointment and reappointment which normally happens every 5 years (2 years for new trainers first appointment).
Details of the reappointment process and requirements are available here:

Types of Appraisals
(1) Trainer appraisal with a Training Programme Director (TPD)
Possible topics for discussion:
Be able to outline the developmental needs/PDP from the last 3 Trainer Appraisals (One to One/Peer) and progress to meeting them
Evidence for Equality and Diversity in the last revalidation cycle
List the last 4 Trainer Workshops/Groups attended and specific Learning Outcomes
Summarise Learning Outcomes from Educational Conferences and other Sources since last Reappointment
Premises Accreditation … any changes including IT Systems
(2) Peer appraisal - Either an observed teaching session, a reflection on a significant event or a peer led session at a trainer conference.
Appraisal Process
In each year of your 5-year reappointment cycle you must complete a trainer appraisal. It is acceptable to do a Peer Appraisal 4 out of 5 of the years, but in the final year of your reappointment cycle there will be an appraisal with a TPD to help prepare you for reappointment. It is also a trainer standard to have a peer observation of teaching in every 5 year cycle.
For all new trainers the requirement is slightly different, in that you are required to have a trainer appraisal with a TPD for the first year.
Example of a 5 year cycle:
Year | Appraisal Type | Documentation |
1 | Peer Appraisal - Significant Event Analysis | Forms 1 and 3 |
2 | Peer Appraisal - Observed Teaching | Forms 1 and 2 |
3 | Peer Appraisal - Trainer Conference | Forms 1 and 3 or 4 |
4 | Peer Appraisal - Trainer Conference | Forms 1 and 3 or 4 |
5 | One to One with a Training Programme Director | Form 5 |
Appraisal Documentation
After each peer appraisal you are required to submit your completed Peer Appraisal forms and a PDP (Form 4) to the training programme via email Emma.Clarke@hee.nhs.uk
In the 5th year for your one to one with a TPD you must complete the Trainer appraisal form (Form 5) and submit this via email to Emma.Clarke@hee.nhs.uk at the latest two weeks prior to your appraisal date.
It is each trainer’s professional duty to the GMC to have an appraisal in each role. As a trainer you should submit the outcome of your peer appraisal to the training programme, failure to do so may adversely affect your trainer reappointment.
